John Clancy, a Syracuse, NY stagehand, began designing and building stage equipment in 1882 due to the lack of suitable alternatives at that time. Three years later he founded J.R. Clancy, now one of the largest manufacturers of stage rigging equipment in the world.

John R. Clancy founds the world's foremost rigging company, featuring many of his own unique quality rigging solutions.
1893
Clancy invents the Counterweight Arbor.
1903
Clancy invents the Automatic Fire Safety Curtain, significantly improving fire safety in theatres across America.
1926
Clancy creates the Welch Tension Floor Block, which becomes another industry standard.
1963
Clancy introduces the Zero Fleet Angle Hoist.
1965
Clancy introduces SceneControl automation, the first automated control system the industry has ever seen.
1982
Clancy’s Shamrock brings compact video screen programming of up to 40 hoists to theatre automation around the world.
2005
Clancy introduces PowerLift, the affordable automated rigging solution for schools, universities, and regional theatres.
2006
Clancy launches SceneControl 500, a touch-screen control with limitless programming capabilities and 3D user-friendly display.

Clancy introduces PowerAssist, the first automation upgrade for existing counterweight sets.
