Pile-up
or Yo-yo hoists allow the lift line
to wrap on top of itself in a narrow
slot. This type of hoist is normally
used for low loads in applications
such as banner hoists. They may also
be used when there are space problems
that preclude the use of drum type
hoists. |

The
wire rope winds on top of itself,
changing the effective diameter of
the drum, causing the lifting speed
to change as the drum turns. The change
in speed may make these hoists unacceptable
for some applications. There is some
crushing of the wire rope as it winds
on itself, leading to higher wear
than a wire rope in a grooved drum. |
